Monster truck driving is a dream job for many. Who could think of a better job than riding around in a giant truck jumping and destroying cars? But there are so many things you have to do first before you reach the top. But as long as you put in the hard work needed, you should be able to reach the spot and drive a monster truck for a living.
Monster Truck License
While you don’t technically need a special license to race monster trucks, it will certainly help you out a lot if you are able to get your commercial driving license (CDL) which trains you to drive big 18 wheelers. Again not totally necessary, but the competition is fierce for those driver seats. So might as well give yourself every advantage you can get
Practicing By Yourself
Who said you can’t build your own monster truck! While not as powerful or sophisticated. You could take an old pickup truck and put on 40-inch tires and start driving it around a dirt field to get the hang of it. That way you get used to the high center of gravity and what your car does after it lands from a jump. While not a great recreation, its better than just being thrown into the 1500 hp monster in front of thousands of fans.
It’s Not What You Know, It’s Who You Know
The BEST way to get attention from many of the teams in the monster truck industry is to just start as an intern. Usually, you’ll be working as a mechanic, so some previous mechanical knowledge is appreciated. You’ll be working here for a while so take the time to start networking and getting to know the higher-ups in the business so that your name becomes more known. Also learn the ins and outs of races and how teams work. That way when you decide its time for the big time, you’ll have the experience and knowledge as well as the connections that are necessary to get you a driver’s seat.
Being a monster truck driver is a whole lot harder than just hopping into a monster truck seat. You have to dedicate your career to years of mechanical work to work your way up and then just maybe, you will be talented as well as well known enough to get one of the many coveted spots available.
